It is clear after the results of the General Election that Gordon Brown lost the General Election. To watch Labour Deputy Leader Harriet Harman on television after the results claiming that Labour hadn’t lost as nobody had won was political spin of the worst kind.
The facts are clear. In 1997 Labour polled 13,518 million votes. On Thursday, Labour polled 8,604,358 million votes.
Only Michael Foot in 1983 has polled fewer Labour Votes in the last 40 years.
As he squats in Downing street, Gordon Brown is mimicking Ted Heath the Tory prime minister who in 1974 tried to do the same thing refusing to resign in the hope that somehow he could remain as Prime Minister.
Gordon Brown has lost all moral authority. He lost the election.
If the Labour Party is to have any chance of reclaiming its lost support it needs a new leader.
This weekend could be a defining moment for progressive politics in this country.
The Tories have no majority and will find it very difficult to reach a long term agreement with Nick Cleggs Lib Dems especially over the issue of electoral reform.
However any deal between Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg to retain Gordon Brown as prime minister in a Lib/Lab government would be a disaster. Voters would not accept such an outcome and both parties would suffer in the general election that will have to take place sometime in the next year
There is a long term future for progressive politics in this country after this general election result.
it is an opportunity both the Lib Dems and Labour need to grab. It cannot happen whilst Gordon Brown remains.
